🏛️ Born in 1963, Rachel Whiteread has lived and worked for most of her life in London. Her sculptures are made using the technique of casting, with materials such as plaster, rubber, resin, concrete and metals. ‘Untitled (Stairs)’ is one of three casts of staircases Whiteread made in 2001 from a building in Bethnal Green, London. Through the process of casting, Whiteread has transformed the stairs into an abstracted geometric object. This has combined physical familiarity with a mental conundru

In her breakthrough 1990 work "Ghost," Rachel Whiteread created a positive from a negative, making a plaster cast of the interior void of a Victorian parlor measuring approximately 9 feet wide, 11 1/2 feet high, and 10 feet deep. Whiteread has said of this sculpture that she was trying to mummify the air in the room, hence the title. Whiteread created "Ghost" over a period of three months in an abandoned building at 486 Archway Road, North London, covering the interior walls with multiple plaste

Ep.9 of Here is Where we Meet with Rachel Whiteread is out now. Rachel Whiteread’s sculpture House was a quiet memorial in Bow, East London and a lighting conductor for impassioned debate in the local community and the national media. Commissioned by Artangel, House led to Whiteread becoming the first woman to win the Turner Prize in 1993. Whiteread sat down with James Lingwood and Michael Morris on the 30th anniversary of the demolition of House to recall how the work came into the world and re

That's Rachael, inviting you inside her home—which was rebuilt from the ground up after she and John sadly lost the original to a fire on August 9, 2020. Rach and John told us a year ago, in November 2020, that the rebuild was underway and that there was a footprint of the house—and they gave us a first look at the progress a few months later, in February 2021, when it was still "empty with wh
