They are the “same” but they don’t have the same effects! Oxytocin: produced in the brain, sent into the blood stream in pulses which produce contractions AND natural pain relief! Yep, the very thing your body produces to make contractions stronger also reduces your pain. Pitocin or Syntocinon: given via IV and given in constant high doses. Creates stronger and more frequent contractions vs. oxytocin. Much higher risk of low oxygen for baby. Doesn’t create pain relieving sensations like oxytocin
