Planting the Colors on Fort Harrison On Sept. 29, 1864, about 2,500 U.S. soldiers from Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler's Army of the James attacked and captured Fort Harrison, part of the Confederate defenses of Richmond, Va. The action went down in history as the Battle of Chaffin's Farm.
