Coprinus comatus, the Shaggy Mane, is a delicious edible mushroom - but you have to eat it soon after picking. It lasts only for a few hours, soon melting into an inky fluid thick with black spores. This is one of several species called Inky Caps. 📹: @morel__momma on IG | Paul Stamets

Coprinus comatus, commonly known as the shaggy ink cap, lawyer's wig, or shaggy mane, is a species of fungus. The young fruit bodies first appear as white cylinders emerging from the ground, then the bell-shaped caps open out. The white caps are covered with scales, the origin of its common names. The gills beneath the cap are white, then pink, then turn black. This mushroom is unusual because it will turn black and dissolve itself in a matter of hours after being picked or depositing spores. #f

Shaggy cap, black-tip, this fungus has the drip 🖤💧 Shaggy inkcap (Coprinus comatus) is an amazing fungus that self-digests its gills through a process known as 'deliquescence.' The fungi absorbs moisture in the air until it creates a solution with the absorbed water and its enzymes to dissolve its own gills and release spores. 🍄 ⭐ This incredible 12-hour time lapse footage from Luke Alexander Visuals captures the deliquescence process. *CSIRO does not endorse the consumption of any fungi ment

Shaggy Mane Ink Cap Mushrooms (Coprinus comatus) are an overlooked part of our fall landscape that can be the focus of your next screen-free kids activity! Use this edible fungus for spore prints, send mushroom ink messages, or simply sit back in awe as they quickly undergo deliquescence, or self-digestion to help spores release! It's not decomposition, but an enzymatic reaction meaning the ink itself is edible along with the fruitcap.....science, fun, and food! #celebrateland #natureconnection

Shaggy Mane, Coprinus comatus, is one of my favorite species. This is an 'inky cap' as the gills deliquesce (melt) into a black, spore enriched liquid in a matter of a few hours. So, if you wish to consume them, you need to do so within a few hours of harvesting. I prefer to cook them stir fried, initially with olive oil and shallots (onions), and then adding butter once much of the water has cooked off. Beware of a similar, gray color Coprinus - Coprinus atramentarius 😊 Coprinus atrementaria)

Coprinus comatus vs. coprinopsis antramentaria 🍄Wanted to help anyone whom is wondering about the ink cap since there are a few that look similar. The shaggy mane or Coprinus comatus is a very good beginner mushroom! :) id like to encourage and intrigue people into safe foraging! Please always cook throughly and make sure you are 100% on identifying a mushroom! ❤️🤠 | Melissa Ketelsen

Mushroom Ink: Part 2! After a long wait, Arthur 🧒🏼 finally gets to show us how to make ink from shaggy Inkcap Mushrooms! 🍄🖋️🎨 Inkcap ink can vary in colour (from brown to jet black) depending on how large and old the mushrooms are when picked. This batch was more brown than black! You can add a clove instead of salt to sterilise the ink and stop it from going mouldy in the jar. You can also add thickening agents, like gum Arabic powder 🆔 Coprinus comatus, The Shaggy Inkcap #mushrooms #mush

The Full Moon Shaggy Mane Mushroom was discovered by Alma and her family. This species, scientifically known as Coprinus comatus and colloquially referred to as the shaggy mane, inky cap, or lawyer’s wig, is an edible, common mushroom. It typically reaches a height of 2 to 6 inches, as observed and eaten at the alternateuniverserockshop. #serpentmound #fullmoon #sasquatch #alma #shaggymane #shaggymanemushroom | Terri A Rivera

Mushroom Guerrilla on Instagram: "Coprinus comatus, also known as Shaggy Mane. Video by @sciencechannel The genus Coprinus and allies are generally referred to as Inky Caps. Watch this video until the end and you'll understand why. The scientific term for this process is called deliquesce and that's how they spread their spores. Rather than opening their gills and letting the wind carry the spores, these mushrooms turn themselves into liquid and let the rain do the rest. #Coprinuscomatus #Shaggy
