June 1979, the Thai military forcibly repatriated thousands of Cambodian refugees, an event that became known as the Dangrek Genocide or the "Ghost Mountain" massacre. Over 40,000 refugees who had fled the Khmer Rouge regime into Thailand were loaded onto trucks and transported to a remote, landmine-ridden section of the Dangrek mountain range near the Preah Vihear temple.
