Residents of Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe basin were rattled on Monday afternoon by an earthquake that struck southeast of Reno, Nev. Preliminary estimates showed that the quake had a magnitude of 5.8, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

LYON COUNTY, Nev. - A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck western Nevada on Monday, just days after a major quake hit Northern California. The 5.5 earthquake struck near the town of Yerington, about 74 miles east of South Lake Tahoe. The earthquake struck just after 3 p.m., the USGS reported.
