Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has erupted again, putting on a fiery spectacle with lava fountains reaching an astonishing 600 feet into the sky! Described as showers of gold by onlookers, the eruption lit up the night in a breathtaking display of nature’s power.

Continuous lava fountaining began about 2 p.m. today within Kilauea’s Halemaumau crater as the 12th episode of the ongoing summit eruption continues, according to Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists. Episode 12 started this morning with “sluggish” lava flows from the south and north vents of the summit caldera, according to HVO.

A tall fountain of lava is spewing from a volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island again. Webcam video from Tuesday shows vigorous streams of glowing-red molten rock in the latest episode of an on-and-off eruption.

The USGS said lava fountains from the north vent reached a maximum height of between 500 and 600 feet before they started to decrease.

The latest activity, classified as episode 11 of the ongoing eruption, began at 6:26 p.m. with low-intensity spattering before intensifying. By 6:50 p.m., lava was flowing onto the caldera floor through a spillway in the north vent, covering 10% to 15% of Halemaumau’s floor, officials said.
