When bad weather hits Houston, state and local agencies collaborate to decide when to close a road due to dangerous conditions such as ice and flooding

Houston officials are preparing for severe cold weather expected to hit the region Sunday night, with Mayor John Whitmire announcing the activation of warming centers across the city to protect vulnerable residents.

The FOX26 area should be ready for snow and ice this week. The can be fun but the threat of ice on the roads and power lines can be dangerous. The National Weather Service has issued a WINTER STORM WATCH from 6pm Monday through 6pm Tuesday.

As confidence in the forecast continues to grow, meteorologists say there could be heavy snowfall, particularly north of Interstate 10, with some areas potentially seeing up to five inches of snow, according to a National Weather Service update on Sunday.

Southeast Texas' outlook for next week's winter storm continues to worsen, with a growing likelihood of a deep freeze and substantial wintry precipitation, snow and sleet in the Houston area. Space City Weather's Eric Berger published an atypical afternoon report on Friday warning of an "increasingly likely" and drastic mix of hard freeze and snowy conditions expected in Southeast Texas early next week.

A blast of cold air is expected to move into Houston on Sunday, and we could see snow and ice early next week. Here's our forecast.
