New U.S.-Canada tariffs hit some brands hard and skip most. The difference isn't your company's flag, it's where your goods are made and which border they cross.

Any trade pact Canada strikes with the U.S. must ensure that agreed-upon tariff levels on certain goods would not be subject to change, Prime Minister Mark Carneys said.

Canadian officials said the tariffs set to be imposed on more than 800 U.S. imports are "strategic" and designed to target some states.

Canada is also introducing C$7.5 billion in new funding for domestic support programs to cushion the blow of the new tariffs for small and medium-sized Canadian companies, on top of the nearly C$25 billion Ottawa has already earmarked in the last 18 months for affected workers.

"Even though there are U.S. companies that manufacture in Canada, Ford and GM, particularly they will have to pay tariffs on the cars that are made there. And so that's probably where the biggest impact is.

Canadian government officials said they are also providing aid for workers and businesses that could be hurt by U.S.-imposed tariffs.

The U.S.-Canada trade dispute and the descent into a retaliatory tariff blitz complicated the job for the Bank of Canada in its Wednesday decision.
