DETROIT - Tornado Warnings and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are being issued across Southeast Michigan, and that storm pattern could continue for the next few hours. The National Weather Service in Detroit has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for most of the region through 7 p.m. tonight. The biggest risks are for high winds and heavy downpours.

Detroit's east side was among the areas hardest hit by the storms on Thursday, Sept. 3, prompting questions about whether a tornado touched down. The National Weather Service office in White Lake said it plans to conduct a survey to determine whether the damage was caused by a tornado or strong straight-line winds.

The National Weather Service will survey damage Friday in parts of Detroit and nearby communities after a powerful line of thunderstorms moved through Southeast Michigan Thursday afternoon, producing radar indications and damage consistent with a possible tornado.

“A brief weak tornado tracked across portions of Marysville, Michigan in St. Clair County on the evening of September 2, 2026,” the NWS survey notes said. “Tree damage was sporadic along a narrow path between Gratiot Boulevard and Highway 29.”

While some unstable air remains, the overall expectation is more baseline storms, with only isolated severe weather possible.

The National Weather Service reported widespread property damage, downed trees and power lines, stranded vehicles and flooding across Southeast Michigan.
