The FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 in Berlin, Germany, will feature 16 top teams from around the globe.

Australia and Japan have both won their opening games as the women’s basketball World Cup. Steph Talbot scored 19 points as Australia defeated Puerto Rico 70-54.

A’ja Wilson was initially set to compete at the 2026 FIBA World Cup, but the WNBA star withdrew from the team recently. Wilson would have been an excellent asset for the USA, given she is a four-time MVP and has the highest points average of any player in the league right now.

The format of the tournament has changed for the betterment of the players, with the addition of four teams in Germany. The 16-team format is not new; it was used from 1990-2018. Now teams will play three pool games in four days as opposed to the five games in six days — which they did in the 2022 World Cup when only 12 teams went to Australia.

Spain's run to the title was a defensive masterclass, with wins over four of the world's top ten teams. They are the first World Cup champion to win the title while only conceding a single goal.

FIFA accused European soccer body UEFA of a “smear campaign” in a court filing on Thursday concerning FIFA President Gianni Infantino's failed plan to sell stakes in the World Cup and other competitions. Last week, UEFA filed requests for discovery of evidence connected to Infantino's proposal in three U.S. courts.
