A major lake-effect snowstorm brought record-breaking amounts of snow to the Great Lakes region, especially areas downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario. The storm caused multiple road closures, including Interstates 90 and 86, along with power outages, school and business closures, and other travel delays.

A change in snow fortunes came fast and furious. A number of locations went from a foot or more below average to several feet above average in a matter of days.

Another round of lake-effect snow is on the way Wednesday night into Thursday, with near-blizzard conditions and up to a foot of additional snow for some in the Great Lakes and Northeast regions. The latest batch follows bands of extreme snowfall that have dumped a widespread 3 to 5 feet of snow in the region near Lakes Erie and Ontario.

As flakes began flying Friday, forecasters warned 4 to 6 feet of blowing and drifting snow could fall in Watertown and other areas east of Lake Ontario through Monday.
