Tesla's Cybercab has officially hit Austin streets, but federal regulators wasted no time opening an investigation into how the driverless EV was certified.

US regulators are investigating how Tesla certified 1,000 Cybercab without steering wheels, pedals or mirrors, just as the company began commercial robotaxi operations in Austin and prepared to expand the service.

Prior to this, Cybercab rides were limited to Tesla employees during several months of testing around Austin and other cities in Texas and California. But now, the general public in Austin will be available to hail a Cybercab,
