The latest quake follows an 8.8 magnitude earthquake near the Kamchatka coast on Wednesday, which sparked a Tsunami that triggered emergency declarations in both Russia and the U.S.

The Kuril Islands stretch from the southern tip of Kamchatka Peninsula. Russian scientists had warned on Wednesday that strong aftershocks were possible in the region in the next several weeks.

A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Kuril Islands on Sunday, following a series of aftershocks since the record 8.7 quake on July 30. No tsunami alert has been issued. Authorities remain on alert as seismic activity continues in the region.
