While tornadoes have struck communities across Southeast Michigan in recent years, the last one to impact the City of Detroit happened on July 2, 1997.

Thousands of DTE Energy customers remain without power days after several confirmed tornadoes touched down Thursday, battering Detroit and nearby communities.

Belle Isle - the state park just south of Islandview on the Detroit River - also had several felled trees. Crews from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources worked to clear tree trunks and limbs, and the rowing scull “Spirit of Detroit” could be seen hanging from a tree near the historic Detroit Boat Club.

Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield said one man was injured during Thursday's tornado while attempting to protect his newborn child from a falling tree.
