There is tremendous potential for a groundbreaking Netflix-Oscars partnership that could redefine the future of award shows and streaming.

Hulu disappointed people with its glitch-prone Oscars streaming this past weekend, while TV viewing was fine. It was just the latest streaming meltdown for a popular live event.

Conan O’Brien made his Oscars hosting debut on Sunday night, and while he earned audible “oohs” at one point in his opening monologue, he also delighted the crowd by roasting the streamers, the nominees and even tossing in a musical number.

More than 33,000 users reported an inability to log onto Hulu just as the 97th Academy Award telecast was set to begin. Thousands more saw their stream abruptly end before the best picture award.

Hollywood's biggest actors and directors aren't the only ones invited to the Oscars and the Vanity Fair after party. Big names from Netflix, Paramount and beyond also attended.
