At least 25 people have been killed in Iran during the first nine days of protests that started in the bazaar of Tehran over the plunging value of the currency and soaring inflation, according to rights groups.

Dubai: The death toll in violence surrounding protests in Iran has risen to at least 35 people, activists said Tuesday, January 6, as the country’s theocracy acknowledged the unrest in one western province where security forces reportedly raided a hospital.

At least 29 people have been killed in protests across Iran, according to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, as demonstrations driven by economic grievances continue to spread across the country.

Protesters angry over Iran's ailing economy conducted a sit-in Tuesday at Tehran's Grand Bazaar, witnesses said, with security forces ultimately firing tear gas and dispersing demonstrators as the rest of the market shut down.

The Institute for the Study of War has recorded at least 369 protests in 28 of the country's 31 provinces since the unrest began.

The Islamic state is currently experiencing its biggest protests in four years, as its economy continues to flounder.

The figure came from the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, which said more than 1,200 people have been detained in the protests, which have been ongoing for more than a week. It said 29 protesters,
