WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI - Nearly 20,000 people are without power in Washtenaw County. An afternoon storm and possible tornado knocked out power for roughly 19,900 people as of 5 p.m. Sept. 3, according to the DTE Energy Outage Map.

The weather service said two tornadoes struck in Detroit on Thursday, while other areas saw more than 3 inches of rain.

After storms hit the Detroit region on Wednesday night, more rolled through on Thursday afternoon prompting tornado warnings from the NWS.

Before the storm passed through the area, students and staff at schools around Washtenaw County were instructed to remain in designated areas until this afternoon's tornado warning had passed.

Storms moving through Michigan are dropping "torrential" rain, the weather service said. At least one tornado warning issued.

A tornado warning affecting counties throughout Southeast Michigan left some Ypsilanti residents without power and damaged electrical lines and trees.

One tornado was confirmed by the Detroit National Weather Service in the Marysville area. Damage surveys underway in other areas.

The National Weather Service has issued the severe thunderstorm warning of Livingston County and Shiawassee County until 11:45 a.m. The storms knocked out power to thousands of homes in the area. As of around 10:45 a.m., DTE reported 22,836 customers without power in Livingston County and 2,757 impacted in Ingham County.
