COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ryan Day has officially been Ohio State’s head coach longer than his predecessor. It’s been a long time since he’s had to answer a question about the challenge of replacing legendary head coaches or about how he plans to differentiate himself from those legends.

With the Ohio State football team preparing for the 2026 season , the program is one of many programs witnessing the evergrowing landscape of the sport, where it’s now possible, in some cases, to go from the NFL back to the collegiate level.

Chip Kelly, as Ryan Day alluded to, was Day's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach when Ohio State won the national championship in the 2024-25 season, and he coached Day at the University of New Hampshire. Day was also on Kelly's NFL coaching staffs in 2015 and 2016 with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers.
