Venus and Serena Williams fell short against 14th seeds Chan Hao-Ching and Maya Joint who beat them 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (10-7) in front of a roaring Arthur Ashe stadium at the US Open.

Maya Joint and Hao-Ching Chan defeated Serena and Venus Williams in a three-hour blockbuster under lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium in the first round of US Open women's doubles.

The Williams sisters were drawn Tuesday to face the team of Hao-Ching Chan and Maya Joint, who beat Serena at Wimbledon this summer, in their opening women's doubles match at the US Open.

Australia's Maya Joint has been unveiled as Serena Williams first opponent at Wimbledon on her return to the All-England Club after a four-year-long absence. The two players stand almost 25 years apart, with Serena 44 and Maya a 20-year-old talent.

Maya Joint booked her place into the US Open second round following a strong 3-6 6-2 6-2 victory over Liudmila Samsonova.
