Apple's Preview app started in NeXTSTEP in the very late eighties. It had its origins in Quartz in Mac OS X in the very early days of macOS, but I'm afraid that my recollections of which Mac OS version made it fully available is lost in the depths of my mind.

Apple is bringing Preview, macOS’s built-in image and PDF viewer, to the iPad. Starting with iPadOS 26, Preview will now come preinstalled on iPads. On desktop, Preview allows users to view and edit documents and images and Apple is bringing this functionality to its tablet by leveraging Apple Pencil.

Apple today introduced an iPad OS version of Preview, an app that allows users to view, markup, and modify images and PDFs. Preview for iPad gives users a range of tools, including markup using Apple Pencil and AutoFill.
