The last time the National Weather Service recorded a tornado touching down in Metro Detroit was on July 2, 1997.

CBS Detroit chief meteorologist Ahmad Bajjey was delivering live coverage of the tornado warnings in the Detroit area when the alert got a bit too close for comfort.

The National Weather Service will survey damage Friday in parts of Detroit and nearby communities after a powerful line of thunderstorms moved through Southeast Michigan Thursday afternoon, producing radar indications and damage consistent with a possible tornado.

Severe weather has rolled across most of Southeast Michigan twice throughout Tuesday.

One tornado was confirmed by the Detroit National Weather Service in the Marysville area. Damage surveys underway in other areas.

Cleanup is underway from Michigan to Washington, D.C., after damaging winds, flooding rain and a possible tornado.
