Troy is Sun Belt Conference West Division champion for the third time in four years after a 28-18 victory at Southern Miss on Saturday. Goose Crowder threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns — two of them to Rara Thomas in the fourth quarter — to spark the Trojans’ victory.

Troy isn’t at the top of its game either entering the matchup. It’s win versus Georgia State was at home against the worst team in the Sun Belt. It ended a two-game losing streak for the Trojans that featured a 23-10 loss to Arkansas State and a 33-0 loss to Old Dominion.

Southern Miss looked like a threat to run away with the West Division title for much of the season, but has hit the skids of late. The Golden Eagles have lost back-to-back games, 41-14 at home to Texas State on Nov. 15 and 42-35 at South Alabama last Saturday.

MOBILE, AL — There were two areas that coach Charles Huff said went wrong for Southern Miss football against South Alabama. The Golden Eagles didn't run the ball well against the Jaguars, nor force any turnovers, in the 42-35 loss at Hancock Whitney Stadium on Nov. 22.

A 35-7 deficit was too much for Southern Miss football to overcome at South Alabama, setting up a winner-take-all game vs Troy for the division.
