Nearly one third of the 30,000 federal employees who work in Oregon were expected to stop working after the government shut down Wednesday morning, according to data from the Oregon Employment Department.

Republicans are seeking a bill to temporarily extend federal spending at current levels without any add-ons. Democrats are pushing to extend expiring subsidies for Affordable Care Act health plans. Democrats have also said they want to reverse Medicaid cuts that President Donald Trump signed into law this summer.

The first government shutdown in nearly seven years began at midnight after lawmakers failed to reach a deal on extending funding.

The federal government was thrown into a shutdown Wednesday with no easy endgame in sight, as Democrats held firm to their demands to salvage health care subsidies that President Donald Trump and Republican in Congress have dismissed as something to possibly discuss later.
