DARLINGTON, S.C. -- After multiple lightning delays Saturday afternoon, NASCAR officials pulled the plug on Cup Series qualifying and practice at Darlington Raceway. As a result, the starting lineup for Sunday's Southern 500 -- the first stop in the 10-race Chase playoff -- was determined by metrics outlined in the NASCAR rule book.
The Chase' NASCAR championship format is coming to all three NASCAR national series (Cup Series, O'Reilly Auto Parts Series and CRAFTSMAN Truck Series) for the 2026 season. This format was in place from 2004-2013 in the NASCAR Cup Series.
