Satellites watched bright burning lava surge toward Iceland's Blue Lagoon following a volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

As a gargantuan plume of magma rises from the depths, tectonic forces are wrenching the island nation apart, triggering the outpouring of lava.

Iceland is no stranger to volcanos. In fact, as a volcanic island shaped by the magma rising out of the mid-ocean ridge it sits on, the nation owes its very existence to them. On average, Iceland experiences a volcanic eruption every five years, though since 2021 the average has been closer to once a year.

A NASA satellite image captures Iceland's latest volcanic eruption, showing lava flowing near the Blue Lagoon. The eruption, which has not affected flights, resulted in the evacuation of around 3,800 residents and is similar to past powerful eruptions in the region.
