Three tropical cyclones are active in the Pacific as experts say El Niño is boosting Pacific activity while suppressing Atlantic hurricanes.

Despite Karina’s power, it is not the strongest hurricane in the Pacific this season. That honor goes to Hurricane Genevieve, which peaked as a Category 5 storm with 160 mph winds in late July. Genevieve never directly affected land.

Of the five tropical storms that have formed during the 2026 hurricane season, three have made U.S. landfalls including Arthur, Bertha and Edouardo.

It is still forecast to be at or near major hurricane strength when making its closest approach to the islands.
